Seperti yang telah banyak diprediksi sebelumnya, The Artist berhasil memenangkan kategori Best Picture di ajang The 84th Annual Academy Awards. Selain memenangkan kategori Best Picture, The Artist juga berhasil memenangkan empat penghargaan lainnya, termasuk Best Director untuk Michel Hazanavicius dan Best Actor in a Leading Role untuk Jean Dujardin. Namun, The Artist bukanlah satu-satunya pemenang utama pada penyelenggaraan Academy Awards kali ini. Film teranyar karya Martin Scorsese, Hugo, berhasil menyamai raihan penghargaan The Artist dengan meraih lima penghargaan yang kesemuanya berasal dari kategori teknis.

Beberapa kejutan terjadi pada The 84th Annual Academy Awards, seperti Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) — yang akhirnya memenangkan Academy Awards ketiganya setelah 14 kali mengalami kekalahan — berhasil menyingkirkan Viola Davis (The Help) yang sebelumnya banyak difavoritkan untuk memenangkan kategori Best Actress in a Leading Role. Sementara itu, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo juga berhasil memberikan hentakan dengan mencuri kategori Best Film Editing dari empat film yang meraih nominasi Best Picture dan dinominasikan bersama di kategori tersebut.
